Capturing the vibrance and beauty of an Ethiopian wedding was an unforgettable experience and unlike anything I had photographed before. From the ornate attire to the rhythmic celebrations, every moment was brimming with culture, tradition, and joy.
Morning Portraits in the Gardens
The day began at the picturesque gardens of the Encore Hotel & Casino in Boston. Against a backdrop of lush greenery and the elegant gazebo, I spent hours photographing the bride, groom, and their bridal party. Their attire was truly breathtaking—traditional Ethiopian costumes adorned with intricate gold embroidery that reflected their rich cultural heritage. The couple radiated happiness, and the entire bridal party’s energy set the tone for the day.
Rhythmic Celebration at the Reception
The reception was a sensory feast, filled with the sights, sounds, and movements of Ethiopian tradition. Hundreds of guests gathered in the grand room, their rhythmic clapping and chanting perfectly synchronized with the powerful, hypnotic beats of the music. The air was electric with anticipation.
Then, the bridal party made their grand entrance. Walking in double file, they danced their way into the room with perfectly timed steps, clapping hands to the rhythm of the music. The energy was infectious, drawing everyone into the celebration.
At the height of the excitement, the bride and groom entered together, making their way to the center of the room. They turned to face each other, and the music and clapping reached a crescendo. In a mesmerizing display of tradition, the ceremonial dancing began. It was captivating to witness and photograph, as every movement seemed to carry deep meaning and emotion.

After the dancing, the celebration continued with a banquet featuring a stunning array of traditional Ethiopian dishes. Guests gathered around the couple as they took part in a symbolic bread-cutting ritual, peering through a large round loaf—a moment that symbolized unity and blessings.
The festivities carried on with heartfelt speeches, gift-giving to family members and the bridal party, and, of course, more dancing. Every detail of the day was rich with tradition and joy, and I made it my mission to document every fleeting moment with care and precision.
